Brookside Charter is a kindergarten through 8th grade school chartered to operate within the boundaries of the Kansas City, Missouri School District. Brookside also operates a preschool.
Brookside opened as a private school in 1956 and received its charter as a charter public school from its sponsor, the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), in 2002. In 2008, UMKC and the State Board of Education renewed the charter for ten years. The purpose of the school is to prepare urban students to succeed in any high school in the Kansas City area.
Since 2003, Brookside has been growing and on the move. As enrollment continued to increase, Brookside began to strategically look for a new, permanent location and purchased a vacant office building from the Nazarene Church at 1815 East 63rd Street (63rd and Woodland).
As Brookside continued to experience significant enrollment growth, with waiting lists for many grades, and achieved remarkable success in both academic and character-building programs, (even with increased numbers of at-risk students at its new location), the Brookside board committed to making Brookside a seamless continuum of quality education and personal skill development from preschool through 8th grade.
Two years ago, Brookside added grades six and seven and will graduate its first 8th grade class in the spring of 2013. Because the resulting growth in enrollment (now 460) exceeded the capacity of the existing building, two modular buildings were leased in 2011 and a third was added for the current school year. When the expansion is completed, Brookside will be able to accommodate 650 students
